The Iranian national team didn’t get much support from its people because they see it as a representation of the Islamic Republic. The team refused to sing their national anthem at the world cup as a way to protest the killing of Masha Amini a 22-year-old woman arrested by the morality police in Tehran for not wearing a Hijab. She died while in custody.
The national team made a Uturn to sing the national anthem in their second and third matches, a gesture which protestors saw as a betrayal.
The Iranian security forces have denied shooting at peaceful protestors. However, security guards were seen violently arresting one of the protesters who was shouting “Woman, life, freedom”.
